Availability Check (ATP), Partial Confirmation and Backorder Rescheduling

A deep dive into confirmation: the availability check confirms what stock and planned receipts allow, splitting the order into schedule lines; when supply arrives earlier than planned, confirmed dates do not move by themselves — backorder rescheduling brings them forward.

Business scenario

Demo Retail orders 100 EA of FG-2000. 60 are in stock; production will deliver 40 more in two weeks. The customer accepts partial deliveries. Production then finishes a week early.

All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.

Step-by-step flow

  1. 01

Order for 100, only 60 in stock open in twin

ATP confirms 60 EA today and 40 EA on the production order's finish date.

Each confirmed quantity gets its own schedule line and date.

  2. 02

Deliver the 60 available today open in twin

Partial delivery allowed: 60 EA ship now (601).

Partial delivery settings on the customer master and item decide whether this split is allowed.

  3. 03

Production finishes a week early open in twin

40 EA are received from production (101) a week ahead of plan.

But the order's second schedule line still says 'in 2 weeks'.

  4. 04

Will the order move forward by itself? open in twin

The 40 EA are in stock. The order still shows them confirmed for next week. What now?

Re-checking every order on every receipt would be expensive, so it is a deliberate (often scheduled) step.

  5. 05

Stock waits on the shelf open in twin

Without rescheduling, the delivery due list shows the 40 EA only next week. The customer waits a week for stock that is already here.

Rescheduling (V_V2) or backorder processing (V_V1, CO06 in ECC; advanced ATP backorder processing in S/4HANA) re-confirms against current supply.

  6. 06

Rescheduling confirms the 40 today open in twin

V_V2 re-runs the check: schedule line 2 is now confirmed for today.

If several orders compete, the order of rescheduling decides who gets the stock — in S/4HANA, backorder processing uses configurable priorities.

  7. 07

Deliver the remaining 40 open in twin

40 EA ship a week earlier than promised.

Billing follows for each delivery as usual.

  8. 08

    Order complete open in twin

Partial confirmation → partial delivery → early receipt → rescheduling → final delivery.

Scope of check, partial delivery rules and rescheduling together decide how well promises match reality.

Common errors

  • “Stock available but order not confirmed”

Likely causes: No rescheduling since the receipt; Stock reserved for other orders; Scope of check excludes the stock type

Troubleshooting

Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.

  1. CHECK 1

    Confirmation

    • Scope of check?
    • Rescheduling run since the receipt?
    • Competing orders?

Interview questions

  • How do orders get confirmed earlier when supply improves?

Not automatically. Rescheduling (V_V2, ECC) or backorder processing (V_V1/CO06; in S/4HANA advanced ATP backorder processing) re-runs the availability check for open orders, in a defined priority, and moves confirmations accordingly.
