EWM Inbound with Deconsolidation and Quality Inspection (QIE)
Process-oriented putaway: received goods go into quality stock, pass through a deconsolidation station and an inspection work center, and only after a positive inspection decision are they changed to available stock and put away into a final bin.

Digital twin
01Receive into quality stock
The truck is unloaded and GR is posted: +100 EA in GR-ZONE, stock type quality. Inventory ₹1,00,000 against GR/IR.
Business scenario
100 EA of RM-1000 arrive on a mixed pallet. RM-1000 is inspection-relevant, so the receipt lands in quality stock. The pallet is split at the deconsolidation station; 5 EA go to the inspection desk as a sample.
All companies, numbers and documents are fictional demo data.
Step-by-step flow
- 01
Receive into quality stock open in twin
The truck is unloaded and GR is posted: +100 EA in GR-ZONE, stock type quality. Inventory ₹1,00,000 against GR/IR.
Nobody can consume or sell it until inspection is decided.
- 02
Deconsolidate the pallet open in twin
Storage control routes the pallet to DECON-01 first, where it is split into single-product units.
Each step is a warehouse task, so the system always knows where the goods are.
- 03
Send a sample to inspection open in twin
5 EA go to the inspection desk QINSP-01; 95 EA wait at deconsolidation.
Only the sample is checked; the decision applies to the whole quantity.
- 04
Inspection result open in twin
The sample passes all checks. What is the usage decision?
Accept → available (F); reject → blocked (B), typically followed by a return or scrapping.
- 05
Rejected: block the stock open in twin
All 100 EA change from quality to blocked (350). They stay at the work centers until returned to the supplier.
The goods cannot be used; a return delivery to the supplier would follow.
- 06
Posting change: quality → available (321) open in twin
All 100 EA become unrestricted in place. Inventory management posts 321.
EWM and inventory management both now see the goods as unrestricted.
- 07
Final putaway open in twin
Sample and main quantity are put away together into RACK-01-03 (ROD → AFS).
Only now does the stock count as available for sale.
- 08
Inspected and stored open in twin
GR (quality) → deconsolidation → inspection → posting change → putaway.
Compare with the plain EWM inbound process, which goes straight from GR zone to bin.

Accounting impact
Goods receipt into quality inspection stock
TypicalReceive into quality stock
- Dr Inventory — raw materials (BSX)₹1,00,000
- Cr GR/IR clearing (WRX)₹1,00,000
Quality stock is valuated own stock, so the receipt posts inventory against GR/IR as usual.
Typical conceptual flow. Actual G/L accounts and posting behaviour depend on material valuation, automatic account determination and system configuration.
Movement type
- 101GR into quality inspectionReversal: 102

- 311ROD → AFS (typical mapping)Reversal: 312
Routes inspection-relevant receipts through defined steps — deconsolidation, inspection, putaway — so that only checked goods become available stock.

Differences by SAP version
Classic WM had no process-oriented storage control; QM inspection lots ran in ERP.
Embedded EWM can use QM inspection lots directly; decentralized EWM uses QIE.
Inbound inspection in EWM is scope dependent.
Configuration
Process-oriented storage control
Configuration dependentDefines the sequence of steps (unload, deconsolidate, inspect, put away).
QIE / QM integration
Configuration dependentWhether inspection runs in EWM's QIE or as QM inspection lots in S/4HANA.
Stock types Q1/F1/F2/B1
Configuration dependentMapping of EWM stock types to inventory-management stock types and storage locations.

Common errors
“Goods go straight to final putaway”
Likely causes: Storage control not assigned to the warehouse process type; Product not inspection-relevant
Where to look: Warehouse process type · Inspection rule
Troubleshooting
Something went wrong? Work through these checks in order. They are diagnostic questions, not configuration instructions — confirm changes with your system owner.
CHECK 1
Inspection
- Is the product inspection-relevant?
- Is the storage control step for inspection active?
Interview questions
What is process-oriented storage control?
A sequence of warehouse steps (e.g. unload, deconsolidate, quality inspection, count, put away) defined for a warehouse process type. EWM creates a warehouse task per step, so goods move through intermediate work centers before reaching their final bin.
How does EWM handle inspection at goods receipt?
The receipt posts into quality stock; an inspection document (QIE, or a QM inspection lot in S/4HANA) is created; a sample may be moved to an inspection work center; the decision triggers a posting change to available (accept) or blocked (reject) stock.
